New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
