Comeback Medvedev Wins First Championship in 882 Days

Nineteen of the Russian's 21 titles have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his first championship for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.

The Russian, a ex- number one, has had a difficult season, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a difficult moment at the US Open.

His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in particular - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually parting ways with long-time mentor his previous coach.

Presently training with his coach and his other coach, the tennis star has consistently progressed in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This represents the player's maiden trophy since the Italian tournament and first on a hard court from spring of that year.

Victory also signifies Medvedev has won twenty-one victories at twenty-one various events.

"It's the first time I have attended a competition with my both daughters together, so to win a championship is particularly special," commented ranked player Medvedev.

"This title is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his last six finals, featuring in that event in the past months.

His defensive strategy and frequent outbursts on court had caused commentators to question if his skill to perform at the top level was finished.

But the athlete has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and play positively, backed up by an improved serving game.

Medvedev came back from a deficit in the opening set against the tricky opponent, taking 4 of the last five points to take the lead.

Both players traded service breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his first tour championship, gained dominance to create a final set.

He rescued four early chances in a competitive final set before the Russian secured a break to that score to close out the victory.

Fittingly, the winner earned victory with a point at the net, with his opponent failing to manage a return after a lengthy match.
